Happy Birthday Monica!

Hello Everyone!

Today I’m here to wish the lovely Monica, from Taylor Made cards, a wonderful birthday! Monica is celebrating a big birthday, and SHE is giving away the prizes! How awesome is that? You can get all the details from Monica’s blog right here: https://taylormadecards4u.blogspot.com/

Monica gave us a thoughtful inspiration board, along with a theme, Journey. I had to do some thinking on that one. Even though the color palette is more like sepia tones, I tweaked it just a little to create a card that looked like old black and white photos. I used elements from the inspiration board, like the old farm truck, and the mountain view. There is something about a stack of old black and white photos that always makes me think of a journey, a journey to a particular place and time, or a journey back through time, or a journey through a long life to the people we have become. I wish Monica a happy journey ahead!

If your are a fan of my blog and my work (thank you so much!) then you know I just love creating with lots of color, so making a black and white card took some planning! I took out a mess of gray card stock scraps and just started layering and arranging until I was happy with the layered tones.

How would this card look in sepia? A few clicks with a photo editing program gave me my answer!

That’s pretty cool, but I think I prefer the look of the gray. What do you think? Be sure to head over to Monica’s blog and wish her a happy birthday!

The Heart Desires Challenge #12

Hello Everyone!

I’m back in the craft room again after a little time away, and I couldn’t be happier to play along with this month’s challenge from The Heart Desires. There is so much color and cheeriness in the inspiration photo that I couldn’t decide what to create! I just kept adding element after element until I remembered a brand new die I hadn’t even used yet, this cute pail from Impression Obsession. So I went with a simple, striking design and it turned out great! You can get all the details and play along with The Heart Desires right here: http://theheartdesiresblog.blogspot.com/2017/05/the-heart-desires-challenge-12.html

If you look closely at the top right photo, you will find a tiny blue glass with gold trim. That was the main inspiration for my card, which features a blue pail with a gold handle. I had to fill it with tiny roses too.

Thank you so much for joining me today!

Gone to Look for America

Have you all seen that great commercial for Jeep where the family travels across America to say goodbye to Grandpa? It’s set against an old Simon and Garfunkel song, and for weeks, I would always get a little lump in my throat every time it came on. This week, we traveled across America to say goodbye to my 100 year old Grandmother, Patricia. We traveled from the great state of Alabama, where the skies are so blue, all the way to a small town in central Wisconsin, almost border to border, South to North, then back down again a week later. The beautiful landmarks and national parks are the part of America we always think of first, but really, that’s such a small part.

Most of America looks like this. It’s miles and miles of highways, trees, and wide open skies.

It’s hours in the car, with snacks, snoozes, and messes, listening to the Astros on the radio.

We drove under the sunny blue skies near Huntsville, Alabama.

We found an unusual gas station with a drive through in Paducah, Kentucky.

We found a forest of windmills in Illinois, spinning away even on a rainy day.

We laughed at the iconic pink elephant in De Forest, Wisconsin at 4:30am.

We finally arrived in a very small town in central Wisconsin, where my grandmother was born in 1916. She spoke only Polish until she started school in a tiny parish schoolhouse when she was 5 years old. Her father’s family spoke German. She had seen many, many things in her 100 years of life, and returned to her tiny parish one last time on May 18th.

We have an old family saying: Cry at weddings, laugh at funerals, and my family did a lot of that as we celebrated 100 years.

I will be back to the blog in a couple of days, with more great inspiration and ideas!

Thank you for joining me today.
