Gone to Look for America

Have you all seen that great commercial for Jeep where the family travels across America to say goodbye to Grandpa? It’s set against an old Simon and Garfunkel song, and for weeks, I would always get a little lump in my throat every time it came on. This week, we traveled across America to say goodbye to my 100 year old Grandmother, Patricia. We traveled from the great state of Alabama, where the skies are so blue, all the way to a small town in central Wisconsin, almost border to border, South to North, then back down again a week later. The beautiful landmarks and national parks are the part of America we always think of first, but really, that’s such a small part.

Most of America looks like this. It’s miles and miles of highways, trees, and wide open skies.

It’s hours in the car, with snacks, snoozes, and messes, listening to the Astros on the radio.

We drove under the sunny blue skies near Huntsville, Alabama.

We found an unusual gas station with a drive through in Paducah, Kentucky.

We found a forest of windmills in Illinois, spinning away even on a rainy day.

We laughed at the iconic pink elephant in De Forest, Wisconsin at 4:30am.

We finally arrived in a very small town in central Wisconsin, where my grandmother was born in 1916. She spoke only Polish until she started school in a tiny parish schoolhouse when she was 5 years old. Her father’s family spoke German. She had seen many, many things in her 100 years of life, and returned to her tiny parish one last time on May 18th.

We have an old family saying: Cry at weddings, laugh at funerals, and my family did a lot of that as we celebrated 100 years.

I will be back to the blog in a couple of days, with more great inspiration and ideas!

Thank you for joining me today.

Hello Everyone!

I am so honored to share this wonderful news with you today! I have been invited to share my work as a guest designer with one of my favorite inspiration blogs, Inspired By All the Little Things! Every week, the creative team delivers beautiful inspiration and ideas and invites us all to play along. You can get all the details and link up your creation over at the Inspired By All the Little Things Blog right here: http://inspiredbyallthelittlethings.blogspot.ca/

Take a look at the beautiful inspiration photo for this week’s challenge!

Here’s how I was inspired!

I just fell in love with the bright explosion of color in the basket against the clean and crisp white background. I love working with paper, cutting and shaping colorful pieces to create lush images against CAS backgrounds. It’s sort of an unusual CAS fusion thing, but I love the look.

Thanks are gratitude are definitely in order for Karren Johnson and the Inspired By All the Little Things design team for inviting me to share my design this week!

Thanks for joining us today!

Paper Sweeties Plan Your Life Series – May 2017

Hello Everybody!

Welcome to the Paper Sweeties Plan Your Life Series blog hop! We have some very pretty ideas for the merry, merry month of May that you are going to love! You can always find great inspiration and ideas over at the Paper Sweeties blog right here: https://papersweeties.com/

Today I am sharing a pretty calendar page that I created for the month a May! Take  a look!

How about some colorful squares and flowers to brighten up a grey day? I used some of my favorite Sweet Cuts from the Square Scallop Frames to make the calendar page, then added a tiny bloom in the corner made with the Thinking of You Sweet Cuts.

When I first began this month’s page, I had originally planned to add these tiny blooms all over the calendar, then add events, reminders, and tiny dates all in white. But then, I decided I loved this page just the way it is now. I wanted a tiny love, with a tiny bloom, and I wanted to imagine it growing all month long, or maybe add a little flower to it every day in May. I love looking at it hanging on the door of my craft room, and I will be sorry to see it come down in June.

I always love to say, “the merry merry month of May,” to remind myself to think joyful thoughts. May is the hardest month of the year for me, filled with reminders of loss and sadness. But that is the real beauty of art that we create and share. It doesn’t always need to reflect rainbows and puppy dogs to come from the heart. Sometimes a pretty drop of joyful pink amidst the grey is all we need.

With the Paper Sweeties new May release right around the corner, you will have even more ways to express feelings from the heart with new images and sentiments you are going to love!
